The effects of domestic violence affect all aspects of daily life whether we ourselves experience it directly or it impacts the lives of those we care for. Many times it has an indirect effect: we may have to cover for someone at work who was assaulted and is ashamed to let others see the signs of abuse. Our children may be playmates of a neighborhood child who has been harmed. We may work in a field where we encounter victims who need support or information. Domestic violence is all around us, and education about how to recognize it, offer assistance to victims, and how to prevent it, plays a vital role in ending the abuse cycle and its effects for all of us.
There are numerous ways our Public Education program assists churches, businesses, and community or service groups:
We provide informative lectures, small discussion groups, multimedia presentations and/or printed materials that address numerous issues relating to domestic violence. We can focus on specific topics for your group or business such as “Faith and Domestic Violence”, “Workplace Safety Planning for Victims of Abuse”, or “Recognizing Signs of Abuse and Batterers” or we can do broader informative presentations. No group is too small and we can schedule a presentation any time of the day or evening for your convenience.
Another option is staff training in the 45-hour Domestic Violence curriculum that satisfies the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) standards. These trainings can be open to the general public or specific to the needs of an organization, such as training for health care or legal professionals. Contact us for more information.
Media Packets/Brochures/Community Events
A representative of DVI can often be found attending community events and distributing pamphlets, informational materials and safety tips to attendees. Some events we have been a part of are the 50+ Festival, the Under 20 Festival and Lebanon Valley Mall’s Community Days and numerous local health and wellness fairs. If your organization can use printed materials, we would gladly prepare packets for you. Please contact us if you would like us to attend your event or provide materials.
All of these services and materials are provided without charge. Please email us if you would like to have the Public Education Coordinator contact you about scheduling training or participating in your community event.
